At what height should you hang the television? A practical guide

Calendar 4/4/2025

Welcome to the first part of our new guide series! Soon there will be more similar content here, and occasionally we will also publish buying guides to help you choose the right equipment. In today’s article, we focus on one of the most common questions: how high should you mount your TV? And how to go about it!

Why is the height of mounting the TV so important?

Are you wondering how high your TV should be? The correctly chosen mounting height affects viewing comfort, as well as eye and neck health. An improper screen position can lead to discomfort and neck pain. Below you will find the most important guidelines to help you make the right decision.

Viewer position

  • In the living room, we typically watch the TV while sitting. The eye level of an adult in a chair or on the couch is approximately 100–110 cm from the floor.

  • In the bedroom, however, the TV is watched in a lying or semi-reclined position, which requires a slightly higher mounting.

Screen size

  • The larger the TV, the higher it can be mounted without losing viewing comfort.

  • For 75-inch TVs, the centre of the screen will be positioned slightly higher than, for example, in 55-inch models.

Your preferences

  • The most important thing is to always adjust the height to your individual needs and body structure. If you prefer to watch the TV from different points (couch, chair, floor), you might choose a bracket with an adjustable tilt angle.

General rules and tips

Screen centre at eye level
This is a classic rule. You measure how high your eyes are when watching television and place the centre of the screen there. In case of significant differences in preferences among household members, you can also compromise and mount the TV slightly higher or lower.

Distance from the floor
Many of you ask: “How high should the TV be from the floor?” or “At what height should the television be mounted?” For a cinematic effect, it’s about 60 cm from the bottom edge of the TV, so it's a range of 90–120 cm from the floor to the centre of the screen, depending on the size you’ve purchased.

If you are unsure about your manual skills, it’s worth considering purchasing installation services along with the television. This way, you have the guarantee that the installation will be done correctly, and for a small additional fee (around 200–300 PLN), you will avoid the risk of accidental damage to the screen during installation. These values are approximate and depend on the height of the sofa, armchairs or bed, but also the average height of yourselves. In the case of the bedroom, the TV can be mounted a bit higher to improve viewing comfort when lying down. It's worth remembering that the right mount often allows for minimal adjustment of the TV's height. This way, even if the mount is not installed perfectly, its position can be corrected using screws that fit the VESA standard.

At what height should a TV be in the bedroom?

If you plan to watch TV in the bedroom, remember that the television is usually mounted higher there than in the lounge. When lying down, your eyes are at a different height than when sitting, so the optimal solution is about 120–130 cm from the floor to the middle of the screen. This setup will provide you with a comfortable viewing experience in bed, without excessive bending of the head.

How to properly hang a TV on the wall?

Check the wall's load-bearing capacity
Before you determine the height at which to mount the TV, make sure that your wall (e.g. plasterboard) is strong enough or use the appropriate wall anchors.

Measure the mounting location precisely
Measure the distance from the floor to the planned centre of the screen, taking into account the furniture you use while watching (sofa, bed, armchairs).

Ensure it's level
Use a level and measuring tape to make sure the TV is hung straight. This way, the picture will look neat, and the TV won't be tilted.

Hide the cables
You can use cable covers or run the cables inside the wall. This is not only an aesthetic solution but also increases safety by eliminating the risk of accidentally pulling on a cable.

Choose the right bracket

So, which bracket should you choose for your TV?

What mount to buy for the television? Types of mounts and their applications

Choosing a mount for the television is an important decision that affects viewing comfort and the aesthetics of the room. Depending on your needs, you can choose a fixed, tilting, rotating, or ceiling mount, and a key parameter to check before purchase is the VESA standard.

Types of TV brackets:

Fixed mount, so-called flat – The simplest and most aesthetic, it mounts the TV close to the wall but does not allow for adjustment. Recommended for OLED televisions.
Tilt bracket – Allows for the adjustment of the screen's tilt angle vertically, which is useful when the TV is mounted higher up, for example, in the bedroom, or when we occasionally want to connect something to it.
Rotatable / movable mount – Offers full adjustment both vertically and horizontally, ideal for living rooms where the screen needs to be visible from different places. However, it is important to consider that such a mount must be really sturdy – preferably on a dual arm for televisions larger than 55 inches.
Ceiling mount – Used in places where it is not possible to mount the TV on the wall, e.g. in service premises or gyms. You can also use it, for example, when you have large slopes in the attic.

What is the VESA standard and how do you check it?

The VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) standard specifies the mounting hole pattern on the back of the television. You can check it in the television's specifications or measure the distance between the mounting holes – this is given in millimetres (e.g. 200x200 mm, 400x400 mm). To select the right bracket, just make sure its specifications include the relevant VESA standard and that its maximum load corresponds to the weight of the television.

We hope these tips will make it easier for you to decide how high to mount your television. Remember that not only the comfort of viewing is important, but also the installation should match your interior. Soon, more guides like this will appear, and from time to time we will also post shopping guides to help you choose the most suitable equipment.

In the next post, we will look at optimal distances between the TV and the sofa, and advise you on how to choose the right screen size for your room. Keep checking back regularly so you don’t miss more tips!
