Don't update your Samsung Soundbar! (at least not for now).
If you have a Samsung soundbar, you better hold off on updating! Many people are reporting that after the latest software version (1020.7) their devices have stopped working. The flagship model HW-Q990D is the most affected, but there have also been reports regarding more affordable soundbars, such as HW-Q60D, HW-Q800D, and HW-S801D. The problem is global – failures are being reported by users from the USA, Austria, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
What is the problem?
After the update, the soundbar becomes practically useless – it doesn’t respond to commands, a factory reset doesn’t work, and the SmartThings app doesn’t detect it. The device turns on, but it freezes on the eARC input, not passing any sound.
How to avoid the problem?
Immediately disable automatic software updates in the SmartThings app or disconnect the device from this eco-system. Many devices update automatically, which can expose you to a loss of functionality.
Is there a solution?
Samsung has not yet released an official statement, but some users have been asked to return the equipment for servicing. For now, it is unclear whether the problem can be resolved with another firmware update. If your soundbar has stopped working, it’s worth filing a complaint with Samsung and keeping an eye on the situation. We hope the company finds a solution quickly, especially since Q990D is one of the highest-rated soundbars on the market.
