Max is following in the footsteps of Netflix and Disney+. Account sharing is coming to an end

Let’s face it – the time is coming when every person using a streaming platform will need to have their own own pass to the world of series. Max, formerly HBO Max, has just announced the introduction of a new option called "Extra Member." And that means one thing: the end of sharing accounts with family and friends. The new rules have already come into effect in the United States. Users who want to add someone to their account need to prepare for a additional expense – $7.99 a month for one “extra member.”

How will "Extra Member" make life difficult for Max users?

Although Max explains this as "adapting to modern standards" (read: higher profits), many users may simply lose out. Shared accounts often served families who used the platform in different locations – home, holiday house, student dorm, or a small TV in grandma's kitchen. Now all of that may become complicated. Sounds familiar? That's because similar moves were made earlier by Netflix and Disney+. And while they didn't receive an enthusiastic welcome, they hardly stopped the rising financial figures.

What do the subscription plans for Max look like?

The platform currently offers three main packages:

• Basic – with ads, for those who are less demanding,

• Standard – without ads, but with a quality limitation,

• Premium – the only plan offering 4K streaming with Dolby Atmos.

And unfortunately, only the last one gives a sense of full "cinematic quality". So if you're counting on truly cinematic experiences – you'll need to reach deeper into your wallet.

When will the new model hit Europe?

For now, the company is silent about the introduction of “Extra Member” in other countries, including Poland. But looking at global trends – it’s surely just a matter of time. Hopefully, we’ll get to enjoy another moment of freedom before the next fee.
