Valve is once again igniting our imagination. According to circulating rumours online, the company is working on a gaming console designed for televisions. Could a new era of gaming be coming, where our Steam library makes its way into the lounge? If these reports turn out to be true, Valve could surprise the market and change our approach to home entertainment.
Valve has been proving for years that it understands gamers better than most companies in the market. Steam is an unbeatable PC platform, and the Steam Deck has shown that they can create great hardware. A console for the television seems like a natural step. Let’s imagine something similar to the Steam Deck, but without a screen – connectable to our TV, easy to use, yet powerful thanks to access to thousands of games. It would be quite a competition for the XBOX or PS5.
According to rumours, it would be a small console that would allow us to run games locally or stream them from the cloud. The technology known from the Steam Deck, namely SteamOS, could serve as the basis for such a device. This hardware could function as a cloud gaming streamer or as a fully-fledged gaming machine, depending on the version and price. If Valve decides on streaming, we could expect competition for Xbox Game Pass or GeForce Now.
For years, we have been looking for a simple and inexpensive way to access our Steam library on the big screen. Not everyone has gaming computers connected to their TV. The Steam Deck has proven that Valve understands the needs of gamers. Now we could get a solution dedicated to our living rooms – a place where we want to relax, not struggle with set-up like on PCs.
Valve, known for avoiding traditional conferences and marketing hype, could release this console in a surprising way - just like the Steam Deck. If the rumours turn out to be true, the announcement of the device could cause a stir in the industry, and we would be the first in line to test it.
Considering the success of the Steam Deck, the design of a console for televisions seems like a step that has a chance of working. Valve has the technology, games, and support to believe in the success of this idea. The biggest question remains the price and functionality – will the hardware allow us to play the latest titles? Or will it be a device focused mainly on streaming and older games?
