Google expands the reach of ads on devices with Google TV, joining LG and other companies that are increasingly introducing ads to their platforms. The "Apps Only" mode, which previously allowed users in Europe to avoid ads, has undergone changes – now even it displays an ad banner, pushing app icons almost off the visible screen. Such steps raise concerns among users who would like to control what their device displays.
Advertisements, previously available only in the United States, are now being remotely introduced in most European countries, such as Germany or Scandinavia, and soon possibly even Poland. It is worth noting that LG had already introduced advertisements on older models, which caused mixed reactions among users – you can read more about it here.
Google is constantly expanding its commercial activities on the Google TV interface, and the latest changes resemble the development of platforms such as Amazon Fire TV, LG WebOS or Samsung's TIZEN, which already offer advertisements on their devices. Currently, fullscreen advertisements outside of movie content are not available in Europe, however, users are concerned that it is only a matter of time before these formats also appear here, just like on LG televisions - you can read about screen saver advertisements here.
