LG ends production of Blu-ray players

Calendar 15 January 2025

LG is halting the production of Blu-ray players, including those supporting the UHD standard. This is another company that has decided to close this chapter. Previously, Oppo did so in 2018, and Samsung followed a year later. The reasons are quite obvious. The physics has lost to streaming, which is more convenient, faster, and more accessible for most viewers. 4K movies on Netflix or Disney+ only require a good network, not extra equipment and a collection of discs on the shelf.

For Blu-ray fans, this is still bad news. Discs still offer the best picture and sound quality that streaming has yet to match. But there are fewer and fewer of those people. For most, simplicity and availability matter, and collecting discs is becoming something niche. There are still players from Sony and Panasonic on the market, but it's unclear how much longer they will last in this form.

This decision shows how quickly the world of home cinema is changing. Blu-ray, once a technological breakthrough, is now slowly becoming history. Streaming leaves no room for sentimentality. And how do you watch your favorite movies – on discs, or have you long since chosen streaming?
