LG may reintroduce the "wallpaper" OLED TV to the market. The model marked as W5 won the CES Innovation Award, even though it was not officially presented at CES 2025. Does this mean the return of ultra-thin TVs mounted directly on the wall?
New generation of "wallpaper"
Do you remember the OLED TVs W7, W8, W9, and WX that LG offered between 2017 and 2020? Their characteristic feature was minimal thickness and wall mounting without traditional brackets, making them look like part of the interior decor. Unfortunately, the concept was abandoned after the WX model in 2020. However, LG may be returning to this idea - the 77-inch W5 has appeared on the list of winners of the CES Innovation Award 2025, although the manufacturer has not disclosed any official details.
Wireless OLED?
The prize description reveals key information about the W5. The television is expected to be equipped with the latest α11 AI processor and support VRR and refresh rates up to 144 Hz, making it a great choice for gamers as well. Interestingly, the device will not have visible AV cables – LG will use Zero Connect Box technology, which means that all inputs and electronics will be housed in a separate module transmitting data to the screen wirelessly. As a result, the OLED W5 will be even more minimalist than its predecessors, avoiding the issue of earlier versions that required a connected soundbar with electronics.
When is the premiere?
Although the W5 model received an award, LG did not showcase it publicly at CES 2025, raising questions about whether the television will go on sale or remain just a conceptual project. The company has also not issued any official statement regarding it. However, if the W5 does indeed reach the market, it could become one of the most unique offerings in the OLED segment. We have to wait for further details – perhaps LG is preparing an official announcement for the coming months.
