Welcome to the first part of our new guide series! Soon there will be more similar content here, and from time to time we will also publish buying guides that will help you choose the right equipment. In today's article, we focus on one of the most common questions: at what height should you hang a television? And how to go about it!
Why is the height of mounting a television so important?
Are you wondering at what height your TV should be? Correctly chosen mounting height affects viewing comfort, eye health, and neck health. An inappropriate placement of the screen can lead to discomfort and neck pain. Below you will find the most important guidelines to help you make the right decision.
Viewer Position
In the living room, we usually watch television while seated. The eye level of an adult person in an armchair or on a sofa is approximately 100–110 cm from the floor.
In the bedroom, however, television is watched in a lying or semi-lying position, which requires a slightly higher mounting.
Screen Size
The larger the television, the higher it can be mounted without losing viewing comfort.
For 75-inch televisions, the centre of the screen will be positioned slightly higher than, for example, in 55-inch models.
Your Preferences
It is always most important to adjust the height to individual needs and body structure. If you prefer to watch TV from different points (sofa, armchair, floor), you can choose a mount with an adjustable tilt angle.
General rules and guidelines
Centre of the screen at eye level
This is a classic principle. Measure the height of your eyes when watching television and position the centre of the screen there. In case of significant differences in the preferences of household members, you can also reach a compromise and hang the television slightly higher or lower.
Distance from the floor
Many of you ask: “How high should the TV be from the floor?” or “At what height should I hang the television?”. For a cinematic effect, this is about 60 cm from the bottom edge of the television, so the range is 90–120 cm from the floor to the centre of the screen, depending on the size you have purchased.
Below is a table with the approximate distance from the floor to the centre of the screen depending on the size of the television
Television size | Recommended mounting height (floor to middle of screen) | Distance from floor to bottom edge of television |
---|---|---|
43 inches | 88 - 93 cm | 60 cm |
50 inches | 92–96 cm | 60 cm |
55 inches | 95–100 cm | 60 cm |
65 inches | 100–105 cm | 60 cm |
75 inches | 105–110 cm | 60 cm |
85 inches | 110–115 cm | 60 cm |
98 inches and more | 120–125 cm | 60 cm |
These values are indicative and depend on the height of the sofa, armchairs, or bed, as well as the average height of yourselves. In the case of a bedroom, the television can be mounted slightly higher to improve viewing comfort when lying down. It is worth remembering that an appropriate bracket often allows for minor adjustments to the height of the television. This way, even if the bracket is not mounted perfectly, its position can be corrected using screws attached to the VESA standard.
At what height should a television be in the bedroom?
If you plan to watch TV in the bedroom, remember that the television is usually mounted higher there than in the living room. When lying down, your eyes are at a different height compared to when sitting, so an optimal solution is typically around 120–130 cm from the floor to the centre of the screen. This setup will ensure a comfortable viewing experience in bed, without excessive bending of the head.
How to properly hang a television on the wall?
Check the load-bearing capacity of the wall
Before precisely determining at what height to mount the television, ensure that your wall (e.g. drywall) is sufficiently sturdy or use appropriate wall plugs.
Measure the installation location accurately
Measure the distance from the floor to the planned centre of the screen, taking into account the furniture you use while watching (sofa, bed, armchairs).
Ensure it is level
Use a spirit level and tape measure to make sure the television hangs evenly. This will make the picture look aesthetically pleasing, and the TV will not be crooked.
Hide the cables
You can use cable covers or run the cables within the wall. This is not only an aesthetically pleasing solution but also increases safety by eliminating the risk of accidentally pulling on the cable.
Choose the right bracket
So, what bracket should you choose for your television?
Which mount to buy for the television? Types of mounts and their applications
Choosing a mount for the television is an important decision that affects viewing comfort and the aesthetics of the room. Depending on your needs, you can choose a fixed, tilting, rotating or ceiling mount, and a key parameter to check before purchase is the VESA standard.
Types of TV brackets:
What is the VESA standard and how to check it?
The VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) standard defines the mounting hole pattern on the back of the television. It can be checked in the television's specifications or by measuring the distance between the mounting holes – given in millimetres (e.g. 200x200 mm, 400x400 mm). To choose the right mount, simply ensure that its specifications include the specific VESA standard and that its maximum load corresponds to the weight of the television.
We hope that these tips will make it easier for you to decide how high to mount the television. Remember that not only is viewing comfort important, but also the installation needs to match your interior.
