Why is the height of mounting a television so important?

Are you wondering at what height your TV should be? Properly chosen mounting height affects viewing comfort, eye and neck health. An inappropriate screen position can lead to discomfort and neck pain. Below you will find the most important guidelines that will help you make the right decision.

Viewer Position

  • In the living room, we usually watch television in a sitting position. The eye height of an adult person in a chair or on a sofa is approximately 100–110 cm from the floor.

  • In the bedroom, however, television is watched in a lying or semi-lying position, which requires slightly higher mounting.

Screen Size

  • The larger the television, the higher it can be mounted without losing viewing comfort.

  • In the case of 75-inch televisions, the center of the screen will be positioned slightly higher than, for example, in 55-inch models.

Your Preferences

  • The most important thing is always to adjust the height to individual needs and body structure. If you prefer to watch TV from different points (sofa, chair, floor), you can choose a mount with an adjustable tilt angle.

General rules and guidelines

Center of the screen at eye level
This is a classic rule. Measure at what height your eyes are when watching television and place the center of the screen there. In case of significant differences in preferences among household members, a compromise can also be made by hanging the TV a bit higher or lower.

Distance from the floor
Many of you are asking: “How high should the TV be from the floor?” or “At what height to hang the television?” For cinema effect, this is about 60 cm from the bottom edge of the TV, so it is a range of 90-120 cm from the floor to the centre of the screen depending on which size you buy.

If you are not confident in your manual skills, it is worth considering purchasing an installation service together with the TV. Thanks to this, you have a guarantee that the installation will be performed correctly and, for a small additional charge (approximately PLN 200-300), you will avoid the risk of accidental damage to the matrix during installation. These values are approximate and depend on the height of the sofa, chairs, or bed. In the case of a bedroom, the television can be mounted a bit higher to improve viewing comfort when lying down.

At what height should you mount a TV in the bedroom?

If you plan to watch TV in the bedroom, remember that the TV is usually mounted higher than in the living room. When lying down, the eyes are at a different height than when sitting, so the optimal solution is around 110–130 cm from the floor to the center of the screen. This setup will provide you with a comfortable viewing experience in bed, without excessive bending of the head.

How to properly mount a television on the wall?

Check the wall's load-bearing capacity
Before you determine at what height to mount the television, make sure that your wall (e.g., drywall) is strong enough or use appropriate anchors.

Precise measure the mounting location
Measure the distance from the floor to the planned center of the screen, taking into account the furniture you will be using while watching (sofa, bed, armchairs).

Ensure it's level
Use a level and measuring tape to make sure the television is hung evenly. This will ensure the picture looks aesthetically pleasing and the TV is not tilted.

Conceal the cables
You can use cable covers or run the cables inside the wall. This is not only an aesthetic solution but also improves user safety.

Choose the right mount

So what kind of mount should you choose for the television?

Which mount to buy for the TV? Types of mounts and their applications

Choosing a mount for the TV is an important decision that affects viewing comfort and the aesthetics of the room. Depending on the needs, you can choose a fixed, tilting, rotating, or ceiling mount, and a key parameter to check before purchasing is the VESA standard.

Types of TV mounts:

Fixed bracket, so-called flat bracket - The simplest and most aesthetically pleasing, it mounts the TV close to the wall, but does not allow for its adjustment. Recommended for OLED TVs
Tilt bracket - Allows you to adjust the angle of the screen vertically, which works well when the TV is mounted higher up, such as in a bedroom, or you want to connect something to it from time to time.
Swivel/moving mount - Offers full adjustment both vertically and horizontally, ideal for living rooms where the screen is to be seen from different locations. However, you need to take into account that such a mount needs to be really sturdy - preferably on a double arm for TVs larger than 55 inches.
Ceiling bracket - Used in places where it is not possible to mount the TV on the wall, e.g. in commercial premises or gyms. You can also use it, for example, when you have large slants in the attic.

What is the VESA standard and how to check it?

The VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) standard specifies the mounting hole spacing on the back of the television. It can be checked in the television's specifications or by measuring the distance between the mounting holes – given in millimeters (e.g., 200x200 mm, 400x400 mm). To choose the appropriate bracket, simply ensure that its specifications include the given VESA standard and that its maximum load corresponds to the weight of the television.

We hope that these tips will make it easier for you to decide how high to mount your TV. Remember that not only the comfort of viewing is important, but also the suitability of the installation to your interior.
