Attention! Software updates may damage your Samsung soundbar. How to avoid the problem?

Calendar 3/18/2025

Do not update your Samsung Soundbar! (at least not for now).

If you have a Samsung soundbar, it's better to hold off on the update! Many people report that after the latest software version (1020.7), their devices stopped working. The most affected is the flagship model HW-Q990D, but there are also reports concerning more affordable soundbars like the HW-Q60D, HW-Q800D, and HW-S801D. The problem is global – failures are being reported by users from the USA, Austria, the Philippines, and Malaysia, among others.

What is the problem?

After the update, the soundbar becomes practically useless – it does not respond to commands, factory reset does not work, and the SmartThings app does not detect it. The device turns on but freezes on the eARC input, not passing any sound.

How to avoid the problem?

Immediately disable automatic software updates in the SmartThings app or disconnect the device from this eco-system. Many devices update themselves automatically, which can put you at risk of losing functionality.

Is there a solution?

Samsung has not yet issued an official statement, but some users have been asked to return their equipment for service. For now, it is unknown whether the problem can be resolved with another firmware update. If your soundbar has stopped working, it is worth filing a complaint with Samsung and keeping an eye on the situation. We hope the company finds a solution quickly, especially since the Q990D is one of the highest-rated soundbars on the market.
