LG G5 OLED – The Brightest OLED Ever? First Test Results Reveal a Huge Leap

Calendar 3/6/2025

Each passing year brings new models of OLED TVs, but changes are rarely as spectacular as in the case of LG G5. The first test unit has already been received by Vincent Teoh from the HDTVTest channel, which is why we already know these impressive results. The latest tests clearly show that we are dealing with a historic leap in screen brightness, which could completely change our approach to watching HDR content. Has LG just set the bar at a completely new level? Let's check what the first measurements conducted by the HDTVTest team revealed.

Record brightness – a difference you can see with the naked eye

In this year's tests, the LG G5 surprised us like never before. In a 10-percent measurement window, this OLED reaches as much as 2500 nits of brightness! Compared to last year's flagship models, such as Samsung S95D, LG G4, Sony Z95A, or Philips OLED909, which we personally tested and achieved around 1800 nits, the difference is truly staggering. 700 nits more is not just a number – it's a noticeable improvement that we will see immediately, especially when watching movies in HDR format.

At full screen white (100% area), the results of the LG G5 are equally impressive – 365 nits. Last year's S95D QD-OLED from Samsung Electronics, which we also tested, reached about 355 nits, indicating a slight but significant increase. However, when we look at the previous model, the LG G4 with MLA technology, which offered only 220 nits, we can see how huge a step forward the G5 is. Meanwhile, we hear that Samsung is already preparing a response with panels reaching up to 400 nits at full screen. The competition between OLED giants has never been more exciting.

LG cares about details – new calibration possibilities

High brightness is not the only advantage of this year's LG model. The manufacturer decided to listen to users, especially those who like to have full control over the image. Now, gamma can be set much more precisely, by 0.1 points, while previously we only had the standard settings of gamma 1.9, 2.2, and 2.4 to choose from. This allows for professional calibration to achieve an even more realistic and perfect image that true movie lovers and home theater enthusiasts will appreciate.

Is it worth waiting for the LG G5?

If you have been wondering whether now is a good time to upgrade your OLED TV to something new, the LG G5 might be the answer. It is not just another model, but a significant step forward that truly improves the quality of the content being viewed. Of course, one must keep in mind the upcoming releases from competitors, which could complicate things further – but one thing is certain: this year's battle for the best OLED promises to be particularly interesting. We will be closely monitoring it for you! We hope that the first test units will reach us soon!
