
Sonos abandons plans to create a streaming device
Project "Pinewood" canceled
Some time ago, we reported that Sonos planned to launch its own streaming device, which was supposed to compete with Apple TV 4K and Google TV. Now, according to information provided by The Verge, the company has completely canceled this project.
The device, developed under the codename "Pinewood," was already in beta testing and was set to debut in 2025. As recently as December 2024, Sonos confirmed collaboration on the system Ventura OS, which was to drive the new device.
Change of Strategy Under the New CEO
The new CEO of the company, Tom Conrad, decided to cancel the project. According to reports, Sonos planned for the device to serve as an audio hub in the living room and offer features such as an HDMI switch. Ultimately, however, the company abandoned its entry into the video device market, and employees have already been informed about the change in strategy.
On one hand, it's a pity because the idea could have worked well in the premium segment, where Sonos devices synchronize perfectly using their app. Such a device could have been a natural extension of the company's ecosystem. On the other hand, the anticipated rather high price could have effectively limited its popularity, and the market could have quickly verified the profitability of such a solution...
