The world of premium televisions is changing! Chinese giant TCL has officially surpassed LG Electronics, becoming the second-largest supplier of premium televisions in the world – according to the latest research from Counterpoint Research. Will the Korean manufacturer be able to regain its position?
What does the market look like? Overall, television sales increased by just 2% in the last quarter of 2024, but the premium segment skyrocketed by 51%! TCL nearly doubled its share in this segment, jumping from 12% to 20%, while LG experienced a painful drop from 26% to 19%. Hisense also recorded a strong increase – from 10% to 16%. Even Samsung felt the changes, losing a significant portion of the market – its share dropped from 41% to 29%.
But what exactly is "premium TV"? Counterpoint Research defines it as models using Quantum Dot Mini-LED, 8K LCD, QD-OLED, WOLED, and MicroLED technologies, excluding standard QLED and Mini-LED, which are increasingly found in the medium/low-end TV segment. For example, the one we tested, Hisense U6NQ.
It is not a great surprise. TCL and Hisense have been ambitiously striving to take the second place on the podium for years. However, LG does not intend to throw in the towel. The brand still impresses with its flagship OLEDs, and last year's models C4 and G4 received very good ratings in our reviews. This year's G5 with the new RGB Tandem OLED panel promises even greater brightness and better picture quality. The question is whether this will be enough to halt TCL's growing dominance?
