Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Generation
Xiaomi has quietly released the third generation of its popular TV Box S player. The device still operates on the Google TV system, but this time it has received several much-needed improvements that could make it an interesting alternative to offerings from Google and other manufacturers.
More memory, but RAM unchanged
The biggest change is the tripling of built-in memory – from 8 GB to as much as 32 GB. This is a significant step forward, especially considering the increasing number of apps and games available in the Google Play store. It's worth mentioning that new Google guidelines require devices with Google TV to have at least 16 GB of memory – Xiaomi exceeds this requirement by a long shot.
Unfortunately, the RAM remains unchanged and still is only 2 GB?! When talking about devices in 2025, it's hard to remain indifferent here. By comparison, the Google TV streamer offers 4 GB of RAM. We can only hope that Xiaomi will release more versions of this device with larger system memory.
New processor and Wi-Fi 6 support
Xiaomi has not officially revealed which exact chip powers the new version of the device, but it is known to offer a 25% faster CPU and an impressive 130% better GPU performance compared to its predecessor. (According to leaks from flatpanelsHD, this is a chip named Amlogic S905X5M). In practice, this should result in faster app launches, smoother interface operation, and better image quality in games and during streaming. However, we still emphasize that 2GB of RAM could be a bottleneck for the device. The new model also features Wi-Fi 6 support – good news for users with faster internet and modern routers. Unfortunately, the classic 3.5mm audio jack has been removed, which may be disappointing for those using wired speakers.
Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and 4K – no compromises
The new version still supports Dolby Vision and the increasingly popular HDR10+. We also find Dolby Atmos and DTS:X spatial audio here. The maximum resolution via HDMI is 4K at 60 fps – exactly what top devices like Apple TV 4K or Nvidia Shield TV offer.
Thanks to increased memory and a stronger processor, the 3rd generation TV Box can become a real alternative to other Google TV devices. We can only hope that the presence of just 2GB of system memory won't hinder the device in any way. We are still waiting for the price and release date – but if Xiaomi maintains a competitive pricing strategy, it could shake things up in the market. It's no coincidence that the previous model was one of the most popular streaming devices on the market.
