Our verdict

The LG G4 is a top contender for the best television of 2024, offering an exceptional viewing experience. Combining OLED black with MLA technology, it delivers a dynamic and detailed image, making it ideal even for sunny rooms. The operating system, while not as open as some competitors, offers a lot of functionality, with the standout feature being the intuitive remote control with a cursor, ensuring ease of use. Out of the box, colour reproduction is solid, but after calibration, it reaches almost reference quality, providing a truly cinematic image. Post-production studios favour this brand for its deep calibration capabilities, including 3D LUT adjustment.

The TV does have some issues with tonal transitions, but these can be largely remedied by enabling the "Smooth Gradation" feature, improving the viewing experience. The motion smoother is highly advanced, catering to sports and dynamic content with adjustable fluidity. With HDMI 2.1 ports supporting full functionality, including low input lag, the TV is perfect for gamers. Overall, the LG G4 is a versatile and high-quality television, offering superb performance both day and night.

The S85D is the 2024 entry-level OLED model from Samsung, which offers a lot for its reasonable price tag.

Thanks to OLED technology, you can enjoy excellent contrast, deep blacks, and impeccable viewing angles, ensuring a comfortable watch from anywhere in the room.

The Tizen operating system provides easy access to applications and streaming services including Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max. At the same time, the solar remote permits control of other devices in the home - such as a satellite decoder, console, and more.

Its AirPlay feature allows for connection to iPhones, iPads and Macs and Bluetooth support enables wireless pairing with headphones, soundbars and gaming controllers.

The design of the Samsung S85D stands out among its peers due to its unusual, rounded shape at the back, giving the TV an elegant appearance. High compatibility with other devices allows for easy transition into a home entertainment system without major issues.

Halo effect and black detail visibility:

The LG G4, benefiting from over a decade of OLED panel development, excels in contrast, black levels, and detail reproduction, especially in the darkest scenes. Incorporating MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology further enhances this, improving brightness and handling light reflections effectively, making the TV a strong performer in sunlit rooms. OLED technology offers perfect blacks by turning off individual pixels, which results in exceptional immersion and a three-dimensional effect, surpassing even some of the best Mini LED models. This is particularly evident in challenging scenes from films like The Revenant, where even the finest details are captured with remarkable clarity.

The black levels in the LG OLED G4 are nearly flawless, amplifying the depth and realism of high-contrast scenes. The TV’s high contrast, combined with deep blacks, delivers an immersive viewing experience, making it stand out in a crowded market of competing models.

The Samsung S85D delivers exceptional black levels and contrast, making it worthy of top ratings. Leveraging OLED technology, it achieves infinite contrast, ensuring that dark scenes are displayed with perfect blacks and no halo effect. In demanding scenes, like those from the movie Oblivion, the TV shows a flawless separation of light and shadow, resulting in an incredibly lifelike image. Notably, the S85D uses a WOLED panel supplied by LG, similar to certain variants of the S90D model. This panel significantly enhances the contrast quality, especially in scenes with high dynamic range, making it an excellent choice for fans of visually striking films and series.

HDR luminance chart:

Samsung S85D

LG 55 G4

The LG G4 excels in delivering an incredibly vivid HDR experience, positioning it as one of the best models in its class. Equipped with second-generation Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, it achieves a remarkable peak brightness of 1474 nits in real-world scenes. While it may not match Mini LED-backlit LCD TVs in full-screen white scenes, the overall performance is outstanding. The fine details in HDR content shine brightly, a distinct advantage of OLED technology over non-OLED displays. With this impressive brightness and wide DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage, HDR content is brought to life with unmatched engagement and immersion.

Brightness is an important factor in televisions, and the S85D offers a level similar to older OLED models. While it’s not outstanding in this area, it comes at a very competitive price. With peak brightness at 600 nits, HDR content looks sharp, delivering a hint of cinematic quality at home. Like many budget OLEDs, though, very bright, full-screen scenes—such as the final shot in The Meg—may cause the brightness to drop by nearly half, which is noticeable compared to pricier models. However, with 99% DCI-P3 colour coverage, the S85D delivers vibrant, accurate colours.

Factory color reproduction

Factory Mode

After calibration

Factory Mode

After calibration

Before calibration, the "Filmmaker" mode on the TV had a noticeable red and green colour dominance, resulting in a warm-yellow hue across both SDR and HDR content. This warm tone, typical of modes like "Cinema" and "Filmmaker," led to a yellowish cast that was evident when switching from the "Standard" mode.

Looking at the brightness characteristics, the Gamma chart showed decent performance for mid-tones and bright whites, but it struggled with the darkest details, which tended to merge into a black blob. HDR content, as represented by the EOTF curve chart, displayed a drop in contrast due to excessive brightness, which overshadowed fine details and negatively affected the overall image quality. Additionally, the "ColourChecker" chart revealed that colours were under-saturated, contributing to a less accurate and vibrant visual experience.

This provided a good foundation to build on, but calibration was needed to bring out the full potential of the "Filmmaker" mode and address these issues.

The Filmmaker mode on the Samsung S85D offers the best factory settings, but it is not free from flaws, particularly noticeable in colour reproduction. The white balance chart for HD and HDR content shows clear issues – both red and blue are significantly weakened, leading to a dominance of green. The result is an unnatural yellowish glow that can affect the perception of realistic scenes. The Colour Checker test also highlights issues, with colour samples deviating from expected values – for HD materials, colours tend to be too saturated, with a noticeable shift towards green, as seen in the white balance chart. In contrast, for 4K HDR content, colours appear too dull and lack depth, diminishing the attractiveness and naturalness of the image. This effect is particularly noticeable in delicate scenes where colour precision plays a key role, which can be disappointing for discerning viewers who expect faithful reproduction of details and colour intensity.

When it comes to brightness, the gamma chart for HD content produces positives, but there is a noticeable spike at the end, exceeding a value of 2.4. Although this is not a major problem in most scenes, in more demanding sequences it can affect the clarity of bright details. For 4K content, the problematic aspect is the EOTF curve, responsible for delivering brightness. The initial part of the chart shows a small spike. This phenomenon can result in excessive boosting of brightness in the brightest areas of the image, leading to loss of detail in very bright scenes.

Although the Samsung S85D’s factory settings are reasonable, especially in Filmmaker mode, it is worth considering a manual adjustment of settings to improve some imperfections, particularly in color reproduction.

Color reproduction after calibration

9.5/10

8.7/10

The manufacturer has been offering extensive support for the calibration process in its LG televisions for many years. Therefore, we used 2- and 20-point grayscale adjustments along with an advanced CMS (Colour Management System) to optimise the display. As shown, the calibration procedure greatly improved each parameter. The results included studio-quality colour reproduction, enhanced detail in dark areas, corrected brightness characteristics, and accurate colour saturation. This led to a near-perfect match with the reference image—the one the film director saw on the preview monitor. It’s also worth mentioning that LG G4 televisions are unique in offering even deeper image adjustments through 3D LUT matrices, a feature primarily suited for post-production or graphics studios.

After calibration, Filmmaker mode on the Samsung S85D truly stands out. White balance adjustments across all content types yield significantly more natural colour reproduction. In the Colour Checker test, colour reproduction errors are minimal and well within acceptable limits, reflecting precise and true-to-life hues. Factory settings fell short in this regard, but now colours appear realistic, as though accurately rendered according to the creators’ intent. This marks a substantial improvement over previous generations, where colours often appeared distorted or overly saturated.

Brightness also benefits from calibration, becoming sharper and more refined. The Gamma, already fairly consistent, is now even more stable, delivering a deeper and more natural image. Adjustments to the EOTF curve enhance detail visibility in darker areas and improve contrast balance. With these refinements, the television provides a nearly reference-quality image, greatly enriching the experience of movies and HDR content.

Smoothness of tonal transitions

6.2/10

7.2/10

The tonal transitions on the LG G4 are not among the best in class. Every scene played from a Blu-ray disc with 10-bit HDR showed noticeable inconsistencies in colour transitions. This was particularly evident in "The Green Knight," where posterization issues were especially noticeable. Similar problems were observed in films with moderate to high brightness, such as "The Martian" or "Kingsman," which is unusual for televisions of this calibre and was quite surprising. These results suggest that in scenes with low luminance and a lot of black, this issue may become bothersome, even for casual viewers.

The Samsung S85D handles tonal transitions very well. There are no major issues, and the transitions between different color levels are smooth and natural. The only minor drawback is slight problems around the reds, where in some scenes you can notice minor disturbances. Nevertheless, the overall effect is very positive – the television performs excellently with most materials.

Image without overscan on the SD signal

The LG G4 does not perform well with materials rich in tonal transitions, leading to a pronounced posterization effect. However, the manufacturer has included a smoothing system called "Gentle Gradation," with three levels: Low, Medium, and High. These settings are effective at smoothing bright colours, though less so for darker tones. It is recommended to use the Low setting, as the higher levels can distort the director's intentions by removing film grain.

When it comes to upscaling lower-quality material, the television's performance is quite good, delivering a sharp and clear image. However, attention should be paid to the jagged edges of fine details and the occasional halo effect around figures. This occurs due to the sharpening imposed by the LG G4, even when the lowest setting is selected (0). This is a noticeable change from the LG G3, which did not apply such strong sharpening, even at setting 0.

Samsung S85D performs excellently in image scaling and smoothing tonal transitions. Like other Samsung models, the TV offers three noise reduction modes: off, standard, and high. While it improves gradation well, it unfortunately also removes film grain, which many viewers desire to give the image a cinematic character. Grain often adds authenticity and a certain rawness to films, which is lost after smoothing. Removing grain can make the image look too sterile and smoothed out, which takes away some of the charm of the original film material. As for image scaling, the Samsung S85D handles lower resolution content perfectly – the model in the photo and the branches in the background are shown correctly, without significant jagged edge issues. The only noticeable drawback is the presence of overscan, which can sometimes cut off parts of the image, which may not be to everyone's taste.

The LG G4 offers a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz, achievable when connected to a powerful PC. For most users, however, the TV operates at a maximum of 120 Hz, ideal for watching sports or other content with fast motion. To improve image fluidity, the television includes the "TrueMotion" motion smoothing system, which features two separate sliders: De-Blur (for the sharpness of moving images) and De-Judder (for judder reduction). These sliders allow users to adjust the level of smoothing between 0 and 10, ensuring everyone can find the ideal setting.

With a response time of 0.78 ms, the LG G4 delivers exceptionally clear images, outperforming LCD televisions, which can have much slower response times. This results in no trailing blur behind moving objects, as shown in the "UFO Test." The TV also provides precise control over motion smoothing, which is especially beneficial during fast-paced video game sequences. Thanks to OLED technology, the G4 eliminates ghosting, ensuring a crisp and clear image even during the most dynamic sports or action scenes.

As expected from an OLED television, the Samsung S85D offers excellent motion fluidity. Equipped with a 120 Hz panel and a fast response time, the television delivers very smooth playback of dynamic scenes without visible blurring. For movie enthusiasts, there is a feature called "Image Clarity Settings," which allows you to adjust motion fluidity to individual preferences on a 10-point scale. Motion blur reduction increases the sharpness of fast-moving objects, while judder reduction smooths out motion, eliminating the "stuttering" effect. This allows every user to set the appropriate level of clarity that best suits their taste, from a more cinematic effect to clearer, smoother movements.

The LG G4 TV supports all the features encompassed by the HDMI 2.1 standard, making it a gaming powerhouse. During testing, every feature activated seamlessly, ensuring a smooth experience for both console gamers and PC users. Notably, the HGIG mode (HDR Gaming Interest Group) is implemented correctly, allowing games mastered to brightness levels higher than the TV’s maximum luminance to map tones accurately, preserving the game’s original visual integrity.

A notable highlight is the dedicated GameBar, which can be accessed at any time to quickly check or adjust game settings. More importantly, enabling VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) does not compromise contrast—a common issue in TVs with local dimming or Mini LED backlighting. This is thanks to the OLED panel’s self-emissive pixels, which maintain consistent contrast. However, a slight grey flicker may appear when VRR is enabled, though this is standard across OLEDs.

In summary, the LG G4, like most OLED TVs, is ideal for gaming and online competitions. Its HDMI 2.1 ports offer a full 48 Gbps bandwidth, supporting features such as VRR, ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), G-Sync, FreeSync, and HDR Dolby Vision gameplay, ensuring an exceptional gaming experience.

The Samsung S85D is an excellent choice for gamers due to its many modern features that facilitate and enhance gameplay. The TV has four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports, allowing you to connect the latest consoles without worrying about image quality or frame rate limitations. This means support for 4K resolution at 120 Hz, which is ideal for modern titles. Additionally, the Samsung S85D has an ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) function that automatically switches to low latency mode when it detects a gaming device. This way, you don't have to manually switch settings—the TV takes care of ensuring a quick response time, which is crucial in games where every second counts.

The VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) feature and G-Sync support are further elements that make gameplay smoother. VRR adjusts the refresh rate to match the frame rate generated by the console or PC, eliminating screen tearing and stuttering. This is particularly useful in dynamic games where the frame rate can fluctuate. Auto Motion Plus Game is a feature that Samsung has introduced with gamers in mind, and it's worth appreciating. Thanks to it, the image in games becomes smoother—30 frames per second looks like 45, and 60 Hz gains fluidity, approximating a 90 Hz effect. Meanwhile, there is no significant increase in input lag, which remains below 25 ms, distinguishing this feature from others available on the market. Gamers can enjoy smoother visuals without worrying about a decline in responsiveness.

Samsung has also taken care of something extra—the TV has a built-in Xbox Game Pass app, which means you can play in the cloud without the need for a console. This is a great solution for those who want to enjoy gaming without investing in additional hardware. All you need is internet access, and you have a vast library of games at your fingertips. This makes the Samsung S85D a great choice for both casual gamers and more advanced ones.

The LG G4 excels in lag time performance, maintaining impressively low input lag across all scenarios. Even the most demanding gamers will appreciate its remarkably low input lag of just 5 ms at 4K 120 Hz with HDR enabled. This remains consistent even with Dolby Vision HDR activated—something that many competitors struggle to achieve. Such outstanding performance earns the LG G4 top marks and a strong recommendation for gamers seeking a responsive, lag-free experience.

The Samsung S85D achieves excellent results in terms of input lag, regardless of refresh rate or resolution. This means that the screen responses are almost instantaneous, which is particularly important in fast-paced, dynamic games. Players can count on the television's lightning-fast response to controller movements, providing an advantage in competition and greater satisfaction with the gameplay. Low input lag is a significant advantage of this model, making the Samsung S85D an ideal choice for gaming enthusiasts.

The LG G4 performs exceptionally well when connected to a PC, thanks to its ultra-low 5 ms latency, ensuring near-instantaneous responsiveness between mouse input, visual perception, and on-screen action. This makes it ideal for both gaming and productivity tasks.

A standout feature is the excellent text readability, a crucial aspect for extended screen use. The RWBG pixel arrangement does not negatively impact the display of fonts or characters, a clear advantage over Samsung’s QD-OLED matrices, which can sometimes struggle with text clarity. Users of both Windows and macOS will find the LG G4’s screen performance highly satisfying, making it a versatile choice for various computing needs.

The Samsung S85D performs very well as a computer monitor. Thanks to the clear visibility of the fonts, regardless of the background type, using it is convenient and comfortable. The 4:4:4 chroma support ensures precise reproduction of text and graphics, which is important during office work, web browsing, or document editing. The Samsung S85D is a versatile television that easily serves as a monitor for everyday applications.

The LG G4 OLED's MLA technology ensures consistent brightness, colour saturation, and white balance from all viewing angles, a clear advantage over standard LCD and non-MLA OLED panels. This uniformity remains intact regardless of where you're seated, offering an excellent viewing experience. Comparable performance is seen only in Samsung’s QD-OLED panels, which use quantum dot technology.

The viewing angles on the Samsung S85D are excellent, as befits an OLED. The image remains sharp and does not lose quality even when viewed at wide angles, making the television perfect for larger rooms and watching together with family or friends. The only televisions that offer better viewing angles are those with QD-OLED or MLA OLED panels.

The LG G4’s glossy display coating, contrary to expectations, is a major strength. It enhances the TV’s efficiency by suppressing reflections at their source, ensuring a clear, distraction-free viewing experience. Notably, the black levels remain impressive even in daylight, a hallmark of LG Display’s WRGB panels. While OLED MLA panels are slightly less effective in this regard, they still outperform Samsung’s QD-OLED panels, which tend to appear grey in bright conditions. With a brightness of around 500 nits and a glossy coating, the TV is ideal for daytime use, except in rooms with extensive glazing.

The Samsung S85D performs quite well with reflections thanks to the satin coating of the panel, which effectively dampens them. Unfortunately, the SDR brightness of 310 nits is rather average, meaning that in very bright rooms, the TV's effectiveness may be limited. This is not an impressive result, so this model will definitely perform better during evening viewing when such brightness will be sufficient. During the day, to get better comfort, it may be necessary to draw the blinds or curtains.

LG’s long-standing proprietary WebOS system offers nearly all key applications, with only a few notable omissions like CDA and KODI. A standout feature is the motion-sensitive cursor, which appears when moving the remote, making tasks such as entering queries or passwords much easier. WebOS also supports screen mirroring, AirPlay, Polish voice search, and Bluetooth headphone connections. Uniquely, it allows simultaneous use of headphones and the TV speaker, a valuable feature for those with hearing impairments.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the match alert function, ensuring they never miss a game, while the home panel enables control of smart devices within the network—such as receiving laundry cycle completion notifications.

Overall, though WebOS may not be as widely recognised or versatile as Android TV, it delivers fast, stable performance and covers most essential functions, making it a reliable choice for users seeking a straightforward, effective TV operating system.

The Samsung S85D runs on the Tizen operating system, which is intuitive and provides easy access to many applications and streaming services. The system offers smooth and fast navigation, significantly improving the comfort of using the TV. The television is equipped with a solar remote control that allows for the control of other devices, such as decoders and home theater systems, enabling the management of all home equipment with a single device. In terms of connectivity, the Samsung S85D supports AirPlay, making it easier to stream content from Apple devices, and has a built-in Bluetooth module that allows for the connection of peripheral devices such as keyboards, headphones, or speakers.

When it comes to everyday use of the television for regular TV viewing, the S85D model offers several useful features, but it also has some shortcomings. One of its advantages is the PIP (Picture-in-Picture) function, which allows for simultaneous viewing of two contents – for example, a match in a small window and a favorite series on the rest of the screen. This is a convenient solution for those who want to keep up with various programs. However, the lack of recording capability from the built-in tuners is disappointing. This limitation means that favorite shows or movies cannot be saved for later, which can be problematic for those who want to flexibly adjust their TV watching to their schedule – however, we believe that the absence of this function is becoming less burdensome as users now have wide access to various content online, making the need for recording less significant.

The design of the Samsung S85D television is distinguished by its characteristic, rounded shape at the back, setting it apart from most OLED TVs, which usually have a flat back. This unusual design gives it a unique look and attracts attention, making the TV appear modern and elegant. The package includes a remote control, a CI+ module, a stand in the form of two legs, and a power cable, allowing for quick and convenient usage of the television without the need to purchase additional accessories.

The default file player on the LG G4 handles most photo formats well, though it's surprising that a few popular ones are missing. Video playback is excellent, supporting nearly all common formats, including Dolby Vision, with the only exception being the H.266 VVC codec—currently rarely used. However, photo format support is limited to just JPEG and PNG, which may disappoint Apple users due to the lack of HEIC compatibility, the default format for iPhone photos. Fortunately, this can be bypassed using the built-in AirPlay feature. It's also worth noting that the player does not support TXT subtitles, which could be an inconvenience for some users.

Playing multimedia files on the Samsung S85D will satisfy most users. The television offers wide compatibility with popular video, audio, and image file formats, ensuring smooth playback from both USB drives and the local network. The built-in media player operates efficiently and is easy to use, although there may be issues with some less common formats.

Audio quality is always subjective, but the LG G4 deserves recognition for its sound clarity. The primary drawback is its limited bass range, though this is less of an issue for those who plan to pair the TV with a home theatre system. Crucially, the LG G4 offers extensive support for audio codecs, including DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby Atmos, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of high-quality audio setups.

The Samsung S85D delivers decent sound quality, despite its built-in speaker system (2x10W) not being particularly remarkable. It supports Dolby Atmos technology, which enhances spatial audio, although it does not accommodate the DTS format. The sound is clear and adequate for everyday use; however, connecting an external audio system is recommended for those seeking a richer and more dynamic audio experience.
