The HDTVTest portal published its annual "blind" ranking of televisions for 2024, bringing a solid dose of excitement for technology fans and industry professionals. This year's event took place with the participation of nine experts and image enthusiasts who evaluated the four best television models available on the market, comparing them to a reference monitor worth 50,000 USD. All of this was conducted without the participants' knowledge of the brands of the televisions being evaluated, in order to maintain objectivity and eliminate any biases.
The aim of the tests was to identify the best television in terms of image quality, and the analyzed aspects included black management, color reproduction, HDR performance, screen uniformity, and tonal gradation. In each category, participants voted based on carefully selected film scenes designed to test the panels' capabilities in the most challenging conditions.
Here is the list of televisions that participated in this year's test:
LG G4 (OLED MLA)
Samsung S95D (QD-OLED)
Sony A95L (QD-OLED)
Panasonic Z95A (OLED MLA)
In the category of managing dark shades, the model Samsung S95D stood out, providing reference-like luminance in dark scenes thanks to its QD-OLED panel. LG G4 triumphed in reproducing colors at low luminance, although the competition, represented by Sony A95L and Panasonic Z95A, also had its strengths. When it came to HDR evaluation and tonal capabilities, Samsung once again proved its superiority with a bright and clear image, although during tests with toning at 4000 nits (scene from the movie Pan in our tests), there were some issues with image clipping. Panasonic gained recognition for its balanced brightness and detail in high-brightness scenes, showcasing its competitiveness despite significant gradation problems. In the area of screen uniformity, LG G4 achieved high scores, while Panasonic Z95A lost points due to dark spots visible on the left side of the screen. However, regarding upscaling, A95L gained an advantage thanks to its processor.
Samsung S95D earned the title of the best in the home cinema category due to its precise tonal gradation rendering and high-quality HDR content luminance. LG G4 was recognized as the best television for everyday use because of its impressive SDR brightness and lack of aggressive ABL (automatic brightness limiting to prevent burn-in). The final highlight was the announcement of the overall winner for 2024. The winner was LG G4, which scored 28.97 points, surpassing Samsung S95D (28.61 points) and Sony A95L (27.93 points).
Vincent from HDTVTest reminds us that although the competition among top TV models is extremely fierce, each brand has its strengths that can entice different viewers depending on their preferences and viewing conditions. The video is an excellent guide for anyone looking to invest in the best TV of 2024 tailored to their needs, and it brilliantly demonstrates how subtle differences can influence the final choice. We have also conducted our own tests on these TVs, so we encourage you to draw your own conclusions!
