LG OLED 2025: Even brighter screens, 165 Hz and new remote control

Calendar 15 January 2025

LG has presented its OLED TV line for 2025, which includes models M5, G5, C5, and B5 in sizes ranging from 42 to 97 inches. The flagship series M5 and G5 introduce significant improvements that may redefine the standards of the OLED market.

The most excitement, of course, is generated by the flagship G5, which according to LG is to be the brightest television on the market. We are talking about a significant increase in brightness, especially in the context of a 10% window of the image, where the G5 and M5 models are to be three times brighter than the B series. This is an incredible advancement that will allow for even more realistic HDR experiences. It is worth noting that this level of brightness will apply to the 55, 65, 77, and 83-inch models, while the 48-inch and 97-inch models (which will also be available) will achieve somewhat lower values. We eagerly await the opportunity to test these models on choose.tv and verify these promises in practice.

Another important innovation is the use of a 4-layer OLED panel in the G5 models. This step forward aims not only to increase brightness but also to improve energy efficiency. Interestingly, the micro lenses (MLA) that we could find in televisions like LG G4, Panasonic Z95A, and Philips 909 have been abandoned. This, combined with the "Brightness Booster Ultimate" technology, is expected to give the G5 an edge over the competition. Additionally, with undisguised excitement, we are watching the introduction of 165Hz refresh rate (except for 97" and 48" models) in the G5

Unfortunately, not all innovations will be included in every series. C5 will remain without an additional coating, although we can expect a slight increase in brightness and better color reproduction compared to C4. An improved Alpha 9 processor will also be used. C5 will be available in sizes ranging from 42 to 83 inches, and its position in the market as a solid and more affordable OLED will remain secure. B5, on the other hand, which replaces B4, will offer a 120Hz OLED panel and four HDMI 2.1 ports, which is what we have been waiting for, in the range of 48-83 inches. It is worth noting that LG is discontinuing the A series, which means B5 will become their base model. (The A series was available in other markets).

And finally - a new remote. We are pleased to inform you that LG has finally listened to user feedback and is designing a new, more ergonomic remote. The glossy plastic is gone, the numbered buttons have been eliminated, and in their place, there is now a dedicated AI button, confirming the growing role of artificial intelligence in televisions. The positioning of the volume buttons has also been changed. Although these changes align with the overall trends of minimalism in electronics, the question arises whether the removal of the "Input" button and the numbered buttons will negatively impact functionality and user comfort for some consumers. Will this nod to simplicity prove to be a compromise at any cost? Time will tell, and we at choose.tv will thoroughly test the new control system to find out if intuitiveness and ergonomics go hand in hand with minimalism.
