Nvidia releases update for Shield TV set-top box

Calendar 16 January 2025

Nvidia has finally released an update for the Shield TV streaming device! This is great news for its users, as the last patch was released in early 2023. What has been implemented in the latest patch?

Nvidia explains that the update is a patch, not a new version of the system, so we should not expect new features. We also do not know the release date of the latest Android 14, which is set to replace the already aging 11. Among the improvements in Shield TV, which transforms the TV into a somewhat smarter device and is used for cloud gaming, there is a fix for the Match Frame Rate feature. Several bugs that sometimes cause GeForce Now to crash shortly after launch have also been fixed.

The fix resolves the lack of sound when connecting a headset to the controller, as well as the video distortion issue that occurs in the RGB 8-bit Rec.709 display mode. The update should also eliminate the case of Shield TV's disk filling up for no apparent reason. Another memory issue that has been resolved is the notification that the HDD/Flash disk is damaged, when in fact it is not. It also fixes the problem with NAS folder information, where its actual capacity is not shown, and the mounted disk space is not directly displayed.

It is worth noting that Nvidia requires users to manually consent to the update and warns that after accepting it, they will not be able to install the Disney+ app via the Google Play store, nor even update the existing app. This is because the update has not yet been certified by Google. Therefore, if we want to use Disney+, it is advisable to install the app (or update it) before the rollout of the update from Nvidia. The good news is that the company promises another update that will have all the required certifications, so the issue should only be temporary.
