Recently, Samsung installed an 8K MicroLED display, known as "The Wall," in the historic Pathé Palace theater in Paris. In the same building, the manufacturer installed six Onyx LED screens. According to Samsung, the installation of these panels will help the Pathé Palace theater raise the bar in terms of movie viewing experiences. The historic theater has finally completed an extensive five-year renovation of its facilities, modernizing not only the displays but also installing luxury furnishings to enhance comfort for viewers.
Four of the six new Onyx displays have a 4K resolution and measure over 10 meters in width, while the other two are 2K displays slightly over 5 meters wide. The manufacturer states that the displays are capable of reproducing "exceptionally vibrant colors," with sharp details, deep blacks, and excellent contrast, at a brightness of up to 300 nits—about three times brighter than the average Dolby Cinema projector, which achieves only 108 nits. Samsung added that these displays are the first in the world to receive Digital Cinema Initiatives certification for use in cinemas. Viewers should notice a significant improvement in image quality, especially regarding HDR performance. Additionally, the displays are capable of supporting 3D and are expected to provide a better experience than traditional projectors when using active 3D glasses.
The 8K The Wall display, which is the only one equipped with MicroLED technology, will not be used for showing movies. It has been installed in the cinema lobby, where it will be visible to everyone entering the cinema for the first time, showcasing film programs and excerpts from recommended movies. It will be interesting to see if this technology will be available in large screen cinema solutions. So far, Onyx LED displays are still installed in two other cinemas in France, and unfortunately, we have no information about plans for installation in Poland.
