Samsung introduces One UI overlay to its TVs

Calendar 16 January 2025

Smartphone users from the Korean manufacturer are surely familiar with the proprietary overlay on Android One UI, used for a longer time on Samsung mobile devices. The manufacturer has also decided to introduce it in its televisions, in models from 2025.

Not only will televisions undergo such a change, Samsung has announced that it will unify all its product lines starting next year under the name "One UI". This will encompass a range from mobile devices to televisions, and even household appliances. The company is currently implementing the Tizen system in televisions and there are no plans to switch to Android, as the changes are aimed at unifying the environment. The manufacturer also committed to updating the system for a period of up to seven years, but how this will look in practice remains to be seen over time.

What benefits come with such a change? "As a small teaser, you can now more easily control your Samsung TV using your smartphone through the multimedia panel," said Sally Hyesoon Jeong, Executive Vice President, Head of the Framework Research and Development Department, on stage during the conference. Already now, Samsung smartphones work quite well with TVs of the same brand, although there are occasional hiccups. Our editorial team experienced this firsthand while testing the smart calibration feature from this manufacturer.

Samsung also assured about its efforts to improve Bixby voice control and introduce AI screen savers in its TVs, including images generated by AI on Galaxy smartphones via “Samsung AI Cast.” The manufacturer will also make the “Daily Board” of the Tizen operating system available to external developers, allowing them to display information in widgets on the TV when it is not in use. Samsung TVs will be able to turn on when a user walks by and will display these widgets, which can also present weather forecasts.

Part of Samsung's vision is to enable control of smart home devices through the television. The company also mentioned potential future features of televisions, such as the option to transcribe live video conversations on the screen, via a nearby external device.

According to Samsung's announcement about implementing changes from 2025, we will likely be able to see the operation of this refreshed system at the CES trade show in January. We are curious whether older models will receive the update to One UI and how it will affect their performance.
