After withdrawing from the production of LCD TV panels, Samsung also plans to cease the production of LED, including LED backlighting for “QLED” LCD TVs.
This strategic change will be gradually implemented by 2030, as the manufacturer believes it has lost its competitive edge, which is confirmed by numerous industry reports.
"The Samsung LED business team is mainly responsible for LED modules for televisions, LED bulbs for smartphone flashlights, and LED modules for cars. This results in an annual volume of approximately 1,446,513,360 dollars, but the focus is set to shift towards more critical areas," reports Maeil Business News Korea. According to this source, Samsung will suspend production of LED chips for lighting until the first half of 2026 and will withdraw from LED backlighting (for televisions) by the second half of 2026. The final step will be to exit the business of LED bulbs for cars by 2030.
What impact could this have on televisions produced by Samsung? Currently, the manufacturer implements LCD panels from TCL, BOE, LG Display, and other display manufacturers after the Samsung Display division decided to end all production of LCD television panels in June 2022. It uses Chinese panels, for example, in the QN90D model.
In connection with these changes, the Korean giant will have to source LED backlighting, including miniLED, from external suppliers, mainly Chinese sellers. Samsung has lost its advantage in this field to TCL and Hisense.
There is no information about stopping the production of Micro-Led displays. This technology allows for the use of individual subpixels in displays, eliminating the need for an LCD panel. Such a solution is currently very expensive, as Samsung’s model from this year in the size of 76" costs nearly 400,000 PLN.
